Dear Papule,

My boyfriend told me he has these little bumps on his penis which felt to me like warts... He told me he went to the doctor and his doctor explained to him that they were a normal skin condition which he needed not to worry about called 'pearly penile papules'. I looked this skin condition up & from what I read, it seemed to me like these papules were only white-fleshy finger like protrusions on the rim of the penis head and were not at all what I felt all around my boyfriend's penis (tiny bumps that really felt like tiny warts). Since the information on this skin condition is so limited, I was wondering if you could explain to me EXACTLY what 'pearly penile papules' were and if they communicable?

Well thank you for being graphic. Allow me to be more graphic by showing everyone a picture of what you found on the Net to be Pearly Penile Papules (PPP) (look at the link "DermAtlas - 5 pictures" in the link section).

However, PPP does not always appear in the fleshy fingerlike form shown in the picture but can also be small rounded bumps around the head of the penis and sometimes the shaft. Let us quote directly from Chapter Eleven of Clinical Dermatology:

Pearly Penile Papules: Dome-shaped or hairlike projections, called pearly penile papules, appear on the corona of the penis in up to 10 of male patients. These small angiofibromas are normal variants but are sometimes mistaken for warts. No treatment is required.

Unfortunately the information on the Net is extremely limited on this subject or we would have pointed you to more links, thats the main reason for me to create this blog...

Hello, I'm 15 years old. I have just noticed these bumps on the shaft of my penis. For the past week I have been so worried that it might be an STD, I think I am becoming suicidal. I have done a lot of research for the past several days, mostly on STDs. Some of the articles have led me to this. I figured the only way to really know if these are Pearly Penile Papules is to go see my docter. Which I will see sometime in Augest. Should I schedule another appointment much, much earlier to relieve some of the stress? I'm also worried about telling my parents and how they will react. I talked to some of the kids in school and asked them what would they do if they had an STD. Some said they don't know and some said they would kill theirselves. However, I think some of the people are just saying that just because to fit in, say what most people would say, and/or what people would want to hear. I'm so worried that I vowed to never have sex or anything like that unless I trust them the most someone could ever trust someone. I worry that I won't be able to have kids, my parents will hate me, etc. Back to the PPP stuff. They are small white fleshy bumps, I don't have any on the top of my penis (That I know of), and I notice some are at where my pubic hair is. I also did some research that said that 10 to 30 percent of males have Pearly Penile Papules. I really hope more than anything in my life that I have Pearly Penile Papules. What should I do? Is their any other information you can give me? Should I schedule an earlier appointment than Augest? Please reply to my comment in hopes of getting some relief. Please, please, please help. First, dont worry that you won't be able to have kids or that your parents will hate you... during adolescence its harder to find a "good" women who will understand your condition, trus me i was teenager a couple year ago and i was thinking about suicide and the like but now that im older, i now have a girlfriend (who also have other kind of problem) that understand that this is nothing important, only cosmetic! Trust me, one day you will find a "good" women who will care about many other things than the ppp ;)
 

HI I am 19 year male and I am very concerned about some white tiny bumps under my shaft. I have had them for probably two years but at a time I thought they were normal. But for some reason I have began to think that it could be something else. And I am very concerned about it. I have visited 3 doctors and the first two times they told me it was nothing that it was normal. I just now went to the doctor yesterday and the doctor that I saw (not the same as previous)was not really sure what they were and told me it could be some type of warts she told me to go to another doctor. I only have 3 very small ones and have not changed at all or spread to other areas they are under by the ligament. I am very concerned about this can you please give me some information. I saw some of the pictures but it mine does not have so many bumps like others. Please answer and let me know your opinion.

Hey I"m 21 years old i have white bumps on the rim of my penis. The Bumps look like pimples. somedays u can see them real well and other days their still their but is hard to notice them. For my personnal experience, when i was going to be in a serious relationship with a girl i feel that would understand that there is nothing there i was just saying it and explain it. All of the time the girl replyed me like "you put to much importance on it, i dont even mind i you have these or not etc.". For the one night i dont say a word and girl never notice them (and trust me they are visible!). It seem that most of the girl doesnt see it or dont mind because they trust me that it is not a problem or whatever...

i have some growths on the right side of the head of my penis they don't look like genital warts that i have seen and i think i have researched every picture i even did the viniger test on myself and nothing turned white yet they don't look like penile papule i have ever seen could it be anything else

I also have PPP...
I got it at the age of 12, and I was shocked!!! I didn't know what it was, but I was sure that it wasn't sexually transmitted (virgin at the time). Still, I was terrified and was far to embarraced to ask my parents or consult a doctor. As time went, i became more and more embarraced, I thought to myself, that seeing a doctor after having this for some years, only would result in the doctor laughing at me, or something...
A doctor will ofcourse never laugh at you, I know that now, but try to explain that to an insecure teenager!... :-D
Then i read about it, and ofcourse found out that it only looks strange, but is harmless... didn't really help, when all I wanted to know was how to get rid of it, but it was better than nothing.

Today I'm 26 years old...
yep... have had PPP for 14 years now.
And now I've simply learned to live with it.

In my teens, i tryed a lot of things to get rid of them. can't reccomend trying to cut them off. it hurts and bleeds like hell, and it grows back after a short while, even bigger!
Also tryed an acid gel, normally used on warts. This only results in a really sore dick, and makes the PPP's all white and even more visible.

Some people on this site ask's if it disapears in time, i've read that it should do that, but since it is most common in the age 30-40, I wouldn't count on it disapearing until you are really old...
my advice: Lean to live with it!
There is a problem you have to handle every time you get into a new relatonship. But it's a small problem and it's easily solved. Simply tell the girl, what it is, and that it's normal (30% have them...).
It's better to just say it, than waiting for them to discover it on their own! In most cases you get a really surprised expression on the girls face, usually followed by the sentence: "What the hell is THAT?!" or alternatively: "I think you have some kind of decease..."
-and belive me... THAT'S a mood killer, and does not help your self-esteem.
tell her, and don't be surprsed if she studies it for a couple of seconds!... she's probably just curious...

its good to see im not the only one with ppp, and after reading comments i feel a whole lot better. But still, being 16 years old and socially active, ppp is really depressing. I keep avoiding sexual contact, and it seems like i won't have sex until im married (i might not even get married). I've got this as well, my Doctor also said its just an inormality of the skin and i have nothing to worry about. They are not contagious! I'll be forward and say that i've been given oral sex and it doesn't cause any ANY problems for your girlfriend, nor does sex create any problem...its just skin. Hope this helps.

To all of you young guys who are so nervous that you will never have a normal sex life, don't worry. I am 25, I have had PPP since probably 16, I have had a great sex life for years and have YET to meet a girl who was worried about them. I am not planning on getting rid of them, and I am not even embarrassed of them. Lots of guys have them, it is not an STD, not contagious, heck, lots of time they are barely noticeable.
Don't go crazy over this. Your parents will NOT hate you. Girls WILL like you (or at least they wont care about your PPP). Just be confident, don't let something so silly as PPP get you down. Think of it as freckles. Lots of people have freckles, lots have PPP, they are equally harmless. No biggie. Good luck guys.

Don't be worried about them. I did some research and found that about 30% of guys (usually uncircumcised) get them. I have them and my girl friend did not mind. In fact, I'm the only guy that she has really ever had an orgasm with so who knows maybe it is beneficial. I did have to explain to her that it wasn't an STD or anything and it can be a little awkward when they first see them but most girl will understand. I also hear that they can go away on their own (usually late 20s, 30s, and 40s) or you can get CO2 laser surgery to remove them however I do not know how much that costs.

Hi im 15 years old and i've had these little white dots all around areas of my penis since i was roughly 11. I have these little "bumps", but they are more like little, soft, flexible points. And they are all around on the ridge of the glans. At the base of the glans, I have three little rows of them. And on the sides I have 2 rows. They are close together and not large. They kind of remind of the way sharks teeth look like, only these little points are obviously not sharp or hard.

Nowhere in my research has anything been said about PPP being transmittable. If you read it closely, "common after puberty" is just that. Common after puberty. Again, don't let your fear get the best of you.
